This article captures a powerful classroom journey where a children’s story became a doorway to creativity, emotional expression, and meaningful learning.
Through the story “Cutpiece Kumar” by Indu Harikumar, a Grade 4 classroom in a government primary school transformed into a space where children connected their own lived experiences with reading and writing. From crafting handmade objects to writing letters, sharing memories, and creating a themed wall magazine titled “Udaan”, students moved beyond rote learning into reflection, imagination, and collaboration.
The article highlights how literature, when approached with sensitivity and openness, can nurture empathy, creativity, language skills, and confidence among children. It offers a grounded example of experiential, child-centred learning aligned with the spirit of NEP 2020 and foundational literacy goals.
This is not just a story of teaching — it is a story of listening to children.
